A mysterious box…

October 14, 2008

A mysterious box was sitting on the doorstep. There wasn’t any visible note and it was extremely heavy. So, I decided not to open it, it might belong to one of my family members. I waited and waited, but it seems like it does not belong to any of my family, but me? The box was just an ordinary box. A plain wrapper tied with a colorful ribbon. Finally, I decided to open it. And what I saw questioned me. It was an antique sculpture. Who and Why would anyone send me an antique sculpture?  I hid it under my bed, as soon as my annoying brother came in. How I wish he was gone! Suddenly I fell into a really deep sleep.  When I woke up, I was not in my house, but a place I’ve never seen before.  It was not anything like cave or old haunted house. It was a place full of sculptures. And there I saw an old man, making a sculpture. And it was the same sculpture in the box! Who can this man be? He had long white hair and so is his beard.  I tried to talk to him, but it seems like he couldn’t hear me. Then a boy came, and the man called him Diego. “Diego,” I said to myself. It sounded very familiar, but what is the real connection of this old man with the antique sculpture in the box. Why would he send this and why me? More questions filled my mind. Then a sudden light came and I was in a new world. I was in a room or a little girl. I looked at the photos. Diego lives in that house, but not as a boy, but as a man with a family. It had a picture and the girl looked familiar. Near the pictures was the sculpture. It must’ve been a present from the old man.

Suddenly, a light came again. This time I was back in my room. I looked at the sculpture and finally I decided to show my parents. My mom just stared at it. The longest stare that you could ever imagine. I’ve never seen her like that. “Where did you get that?,” she asked curiously. “It was from the box outside.” I said, “I took it because it seemed it didn’t belong to anybody. Why?” She looked at me and back at the sculpture. Finally she said “That was grandmas. It was from her great great grandfather. And now it belongs to you. They pass it every 2nd generation” I was stunned by her sudden reply. But who, why? The next morning a call came, grandma died. We went at the funeral, and when I looked at her grave. The sculpture was there and she looked at me. “How…how could?” Before I could say anything a bright light came and I woke up. It was just a dream. There wasn’t any sign of the box, not even the sculpture.

Sleep……sleep……sleep…zZZzzzZzz….

October 3, 2008

Most of the students in my class has unbalanced sleeps. They would sleep late, wake up after 3-5 hours of sleep and then sleep again after they come back from school. Then they do the same routine again and again. People who sleep less than 7 hours are more likely to develop diseases. Lack of sleep can be make your blood pressures and cholesterols worse. Your heart will be healthy if you get 7 to 9 hours of sleep. It may prevent you from getting cancer and it reduces stress. A lot of students, especially middleschool to highschool are stressed with homeworks or projects, especially when they dont get enough sleep.

Scientists have proven that sleeping can make you smarter and bolsters your memory. You can lose weight by sleeping too. You burn more calories while sleeping than while watching TV. Depression mainly starts when you are a teen. They are more likely to suffer depression. Sleeping reduces having risk of depression. Now do you feel sleepy?

Lets meet…

September 29, 2008

Aside from Michael Phelps, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Britney Spears, Bao Xishun (tallest man alive), Madonna or Michael Jackson (LOL), i would love to meet Cameron Diaz. You might have heard of her from movies such as, Charlie’s Angels, Shrek 1-3 (voice of Fiona), What happens in Vegas or My bestfriend’s wedding. She’s just my favorite actress since I was young. Me and my friends would pretend we were the Charlie’s Angels kiddie version and I would be Cameron Diaz! She was a model on her teen days, (which is what I dream to be too), and then auditioned for the movie “The Mask” where she started gaining popularity. She is one of the highest paid actress in Hollywood and even though she suffers obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) I am a very big fan of hers and I would really want to meet her.

P.S. meet her for real (YAY)

A letter from a Jamestown settler

September 24, 2008

March 14, 1622

Dear Ma and Pa,

I miss you a lot! Everyday I am here I think of you and how you are. We arrived here somewhere by April. We called the place we settled Jamestown after our king. There were only a few women and I was one of them. Basically, we were just adventurers, seeking fortune. Men lacked farming and carpentry skills. Not all women could help for our minuscule number.

I don’t think I can brag about the place. As first, we thought the place would have a good-quality, but it was very poor. There were disease-carrying mosquitoes and the water was too salty. I didn’t even drink any of it. It was disgusting not being able to take a bath for weeks for the water supply was weak.

When winter came, two thirds of our people died from starvation and malaria. It was heartbreaking seeing all of them dead. We buried all of the dead people for one month. Smith took control, which made our condition somewhat better. Then, the leader of Powhatan, an American Indian community, Wahunsanacock, helped us and gave us food to it. Some of us forced them to bring food by force though.

Soon, more settlers came, but a sudden accident led Smith to go back to England, leaving us with no leader and we were impelled to make exports to England. We found Tobacco, however it was bitter. It was a good thing when John Rolfe, a colonist, introduced a sweeter version. This made successful exports to England. Rolfe then married Pocahontas, Wahunsanacock’s daughter which helped our relationship with the Powhatans. Some of us married the Powhatans too.

Losing interest being dependent with the Powhatans, led to a conflict. Soon, colonists killed a Powhatan leader and they killed lots of our people. Many were traumatized, seeing their families being killed. This led for some of us to burn the Powhatan’s villages. I was injured, so some of us hid somewhere far by the town. I didn’t want to see the terror that lies in that town. I am very glad and lucky to be alive! Please do take care! May our God bless you!

Sincerely yours,

Elizabeth Clark

M.B.C. and S.A.’s Role of Religion Comparison

September 11, 2008

Witch Trials

Witch Trials

Women had to obey their husbands, have children and do house work. It is believed in MBC that women had 3 roles and so is here in Saudi! They both abhor and don’t believe about witchcraft or magic. The people in MBC killed people involved with witchcraft and in SA, or for the Muslims in Islam, magic is forbidden and it is sinful. They have a sacred place to practice their religion. Church for the Christians and mosque for the Muslims. Families disagree on relatives transferring to other countries were they could do things which are not allowed in their homeland.

Women in MBC are more liberated than the women in Saudi Arabia. The women in MBC have more rights and can do more things freely, while the women in SA have fewer privileges.

In MBC it is co-ed but in Saudi, boys and girls are separated. Especially on education there are schools for girls and schools for boys only. Men can have 4 wives in Saudi or Islam but Christianity condemns it.  Women in SA cover their face, hands and wear this traditional clothing “abaya.” And in MBC, women wear formal dresses with an apron and a shawl and a head cover that is similar to a bandana.
